Victoria Amelina Fellowship 2026 for Nonfiction Writers

Victoria Amelina Fellowship 2026 for Nonfiction Writers

The fellowship honors the legacy of Victoria Amelina — a Ukrainian writer, documentarian, and human rights advocate whose work focused on war-related truth-telling and human stories. The program supports nonfiction authors examining the causes and consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as broader social and cultural transformations shaped by the war.

Programme Overview

In 2026, INDEX will select two fellows who will spend April–June in Lviv, the hometown of Victoria Amelina. During this period, participants will work on an original nonfiction project in any documentary form: a book manuscript, long-form reportage, essay collection, script, or poetry-based documentary work. The fellowship offers immersion in a vibrant literary community, editorial mentoring, and opportunities for peer exchange.

What Fellows Receive

  • a monthly stipend of 1,200 USD for three months;
  • accommodation in an apartment in central Lviv;
  • a dedicated workspace at the INDEX office;
  • participation in seminars, workshops, and group discussions;
  • media support and promotion of the resulting work;
  • integration into Ukrainian and international nonfiction communities.

Expected Outcomes

  • a completed nonfiction work (book manuscript, script, collection, etc.);
  • one essay or column reflecting on the fellowship experience.

How to Apply

The call is open to Ukrainian and international nonfiction writers. Applicants must propose a project that addresses the Russian–Ukrainian war and its social, cultural, or humanitarian implications.
