Horizon Europe / Chips JU
The European Commission, together with the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU), has launched a global call for proposals under the Horizon Europe programme. The call aligns with the strategic research and innovation agenda SRIA 2026. Specifically, it aims to support projects that generate new knowledge and validate the feasibility of novel solutions in microelectronics and semiconductor technologies.
Who Can Apply for Chips JU?
The call is open to multi-partner consortia. In particular, eligible members include:
- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs);
- Large companies;
- Universities;
- Research and technology organisations;
- Public bodies and governmental organisations.
Furthermore, each consortium must show the capacity to jointly implement an innovative project. A clearly defined deployment and commercialisation plan within the Chips JU ecosystem is required.
Scope & Eligibility
Submitted projects must fall under the Research and Innovation Action (RIA) type. Additionally, they should address one or more of the following activities:
- Applied research;
- Technology development and improvement;
- Creation of new methods and tools, as well as their integration;
- Testing and validation of small-scale prototypes in a laboratory or simulated environment.
In essence, RIA projects should create or find new uses for advanced technological solutions. Subsequently, these solutions must be tested in a real product, service, or functional output. Moreover, applicants must justify the development’s potential for relevant industries. This includes addressing major societal challenges.
In addition, testing must take place in an environment close to real operating conditions. As a result, a clear deployment and commercialisation plan is a mandatory element of every proposal. This plan must also define the project’s contribution to the strategic goals of Chips JU.
Finally, portfolio selection will balance two priorities: developing innovative technologies aligned with the SRIA’s functional areas, and applying them across various industries and sectors.
Funding Amount
Projects can receive up to €12,000,000 in grant funding. The final amount follows the submitted project budget and Horizon Europe rules. Consequently, it depends on the consortium’s size, the scope of research, and the agreed cost estimate.
How to Apply for Chips JU grant?
To apply, submit your proposal via the Funding & Tenders Portal. Applicants must prepare and upload a complete document package through the electronic submission system. However, note that incomplete applications will not be considered.
