The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS Sofia) announces a competition for the Gerda Henkel Scholarship, aimed at fundamental historical research in the fields of social and humanities sciences.

Who is this program for?

The Gerda Henkel Scholarship is designed for Ukrainian scholars who hold a PhD in social or humanities sciences and have international research experience (participation in projects, international conferences, etc.).

Preferred candidates:

  • Under 45 years old;
  • Fluent in English;
  • Have publications in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Key Benefits of the Program

The program provides a five-month research opportunity at the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia. Fellows receive:

  • €850  monthly stipend;
  • An additional  €100 per month  for research expenses;
  • €800 for travel reimbursement;
  • A one-time  €1500  grant for international research travel.

How to Apply?

Candidates can choose one of the two available periods:

  1. October 1, 2025 – February 28, 2026  (Winter semester);
  2. March 1, 2026 – July 31, 2026  (Summer semester).

Required documents (in English):

  • Application form;
  • Research project description;
  • A scanned copy of the PhD certificate (if obtained more than eight years ago, two additional recommendation letters from scholars are required).
