Urgent Need Fund: grants up to $10,000 for animal rescue

Urgent Need Fund: grants up to $10,000 for animal rescue

Lady Freethinker has opened applications for its Urgent Need Fund. This grant programme supports organisations that rescue animals, provide medical care, food and shelter, or work to change how animals are treated. Each grant goes up to $10,000 USD per organisation, and applications close on 9 August 2026.

Nonprofits from anywhere in the world can apply, including organisations in Ukraine. The main requirement is registration as an NGO for at least 2 years. Below we cover what the fund pays for, who qualifies, which documents to prepare, and how the application works.

What the Urgent Need Fund pays for

The fund backs projects that directly help animals or shift attitudes toward them. According to the programme, you can use the money for:

  • rescue missions and evacuation of animals from dangerous conditions;
  • veterinary and medical care;
  • food and basic supplies for animals;
  • shelter, enclosures or housing;
  • awareness campaigns about humane treatment of animals.

The focus is narrow, so the project has to be about animals: shelters, animal-welfare NGOs, veterinary initiatives, spay and neuter programmes, street-animal rescuers, rehabilitation centres. For Ukrainian organisations this fits well, because the war left many animals needing evacuation, treatment and daily care.

Nail down your project focus first. If your organisation is still shaping the idea, start with a clear problem statement and a defined outcome. Shaping a project idea →

Who can apply, and do Ukrainian organisations qualify

An organisation from any country can apply if it meets these conditions:

  • it is registered as a 501(c)(3) in the U.S. or as an NGO in its own country;
  • it has been officially registered for at least 2 years;
  • it can provide financial reporting for the past year and its tax filing;
  • it can provide a bank statement for the most recent completed month.

Ukrainian animal-welfare NGOs meet the base criteria, because they are registered as NGOs in their country and can show 2 years of work. One practical point matters here: you must submit every document in English. So prepare or translate the financial report, tax filing and bank statement in advance, and leave enough time before the deadline to do it properly.

How much you can get and which documents to prepare

The maximum grant is $10,000 USD per organisation. The actual amount can be lower, because the donors decide the size based on the project and its budget. In past cycles Lady Freethinker supported organisations across the world, from U.S. shelters to veterinary programmes in India, Liberia and Sri Lanka, so the geography is broad.

Before you fill out the online form, prepare this package:

  • an overview of your organisation and its mission;
  • a detailed description of the specific project with an itemised budget;
  • a link to your website and/or social media pages;
  • documentation of your tax-exempt status;
  • for organisations outside the U.S.: your NGO financial report and your most recent tax filing;
  • a bank statement for the most recent completed month.

How to apply and what to watch on the deadline

The 2026 cycle opened on 1 July 2026 at 9 AM Pacific Time and runs until 9 August 2026, 5 PM PT. Lady Freethinker will announce results on 2 November 2026. Applications go through the online system only, on the official programme page. The team does not accept applications by email or by any other method.

Pacific Time runs several hours behind Kyiv, so plan to submit a few days early rather than on the last day. The 5 PM PT deadline on 9 August falls late in the evening Kyiv time, and submitting early also gives you a buffer if the system throws up any technical issues.

Last-minute applications rarely win. Proposals put together a few days before the deadline are almost always stronger than the ones written overnight. How to search and apply for grants effectively →
