The Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna invites scholars in the humanities and social sciences to apply for the Jan Patočka Fellowship. This program offers researchers a unique opportunity to focus on their projects in the prestigious academic environment of Vienna, Austria. The program’s themes include (post)Europe, the history of philosophy, postcolonialism, war, technology, modernity, and the dialectics of enlightenment.

What’s on Offer:

Participants will have the opportunity to conduct research on their chosen topic at the IWM in Vienna while receiving financial support in the form of a monthly stipend:

  • €2,750 for those still pursuing a PhD,
  • €3,300 for postdoctoral scholars.

Researchers will have five months (from September 2025 to June 2026) to work on their projects at the institute.

Who Can Apply:

The program is open to scholars who are pursuing or have already obtained a PhD in the humanities or social sciences after 2021. The research must align with the program’s thematic areas and address current academic and societal challenges.

Application Requirements:

To apply, the following documents must be prepared:

  • A completed application form,
  • A CV including a list of publications,
  • A brief description of the research project (up to 550 characters),
  • A detailed project proposal (up to 7,500 characters), outlining objectives, methods, research scope, and a work plan,
  • A motivation letter explaining how participation in the program will benefit the research,
  • Two recommendation letters.

All documents must be submitted in English, in PDF format, and titled using Latin characters.
